As of 11 June the TandEM women's cycling course is officially over. Success stories and challenges have been shared with the rest of the companions from the EIT Urban Mobility and BYCS course, and more importantly, the four cycling lessons have been completed with local participants.

In Tallinn, together with the collaboration of Pagulasabi (Estonian Refugee Council) and City Bike I had 10 wonderful women taking part of the training. Huge thanks to Kristiina Soosaar and Valerie Hubner from Pagulasabi for their help!

So, how did it go? I think we can surely call it a success story without any major roadblocks (literally). I am particularly proud that the five ladies that began without any previous contact with a bicycle all managed to pedal by the end of the third session. And with some more advanced ladies we even went for a shared bike ride around Kalaranna and Balti Jaam. Below is a short clip of a complete beginner rollin' through the city in our fourth session. All it took was patience, persistence and a bit of perspiration;)

So what exactly did we do in the four sessions? Here's a little outline:

  1. Day: balancing exercises and starting to search for the pedal

  2. Day: more balancing exercises (for some) and ditching obstacles for others

  3. Day: more balancing and pedaling exercises (for some), ditching obstacles, riding with one hand, breaking and taking off fast, testing the bike lanes.

  4. Day: bike repair basics, traffic rules basics and a shared bike ride between Kanuti aed - - Kultuurikilomeeter - Kalaranna - Balti Jaam - Tornide väljak- City Bike.

Since the feedback from the participants was very positive, I am opening up a new inscription phase for the next course in August. Are you a woman and...
